Bookmarks to Remember and Dismember

An interactive project of the Institute for Art in Context, UdK Berlin and IN-BEST

In the summer semester of 2023, students from TU Berlin, Yale University and UdK Berlin met to conceptualize digital formats for making (digital) archival assets and community-based collections publicly available. The course was part of the collaborative project Intersectional Black European Studies (ZIFG/TU Berlin, Yale University and RAA Berlin).

Bookmarks to Remember and Dismember is a project that envisions methods of intervening into public and private archives. The objects address the possibility of radically inclusive archives, in particular the (shadow) archives of Black, African and Afrodiasporic, Indigenous, PoC and queer subjects, collectives and communities in Germany/Europe. Together with the speculative library project SichtBar2018, a mobile mini library, our group of artists expands the Institute for Art in Context library with the creation of the category and keyword “Intersectional Black European Studies.” Guests are invited to interact with the books and the bookmarks.

An ongoing project in crossborder team-teaching conceived by Maisha M. Auma, Fatima El-Tayeb, Karina Griffith, with contributions from Anita Nguyễn, Meko Herr, Hank Wuestenberg, Tomka Weiß, Elo Abissa, Simo Kupiainen, Yero Adugna Eticha, Hannah Senoner, Mudar Al-Khufash, Timmi Kwaku Davis, Hamze Bytyci, Alice Kahei Yu and Svenja Schulte. intersectionalblackeuropeanstudies.com/digital-archive
